Over 4,300 lung cancer cases reported in Gujarat in 5 years, 55% rise observed

Gujarat has witnessed a notable rise in lung cancer cases in the last five years. At the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI), located in Civil Hospital, a total of 4,397 patients were treated for lung cancer over the last five years — comprising 3,597 men, 799 women, and 1 child. This indicates that 80% of lung cancer patients are male.
Every year on August 1, World Lung Cancer Day is observed. During the five-year period, GCRI treated a total of 4,397 lung cancer patients.
Year-wise patient count
| Year | Patient count |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 700 |
| 2021 | 813 |
| 2022 | 895 |
| 2023 | 933 |
| 2024 | 1,086 (highest so far) |
Additionally, 1,426 patients from other states in India also received life-saving treatment in Gujarat, thanks to the availability of advanced medical infrastructure.
GCRI has urged people to take timely screening and treatment to protect themselves from lung cancer. They warned that due to lack of awareness, over 40% of cases in India are diagnosed late, which makes treatment more difficult.
Those at high risk — especially long-term smokers and individuals frequently exposed to pollutants — are encouraged to undergo a low-dose CT scan. Experts emphasise that early diagnosis and immediate treatment are the most effective measures against this disease.
Dr Shashank Pandya, Director of GCRI said, “Awareness is the most powerful weapon against lung cancer. Timely screening, quitting tobacco, and recognizing early warning signs can save many lives.”
