Convictions in Unsafe Food Cases

Health Risks of Unsafe Food
Doctors warn that unsafe food often does not show visible signs of contamination. Harmful bacteria, viruses and toxins can be present even in food that appears fresh and clean.
Experts say food contamination is not limited to roadside vendors or restaurants. Improper storage, use of contaminated water, inadequate cooking, poor hygiene, failure to wash fruits and vegetables properly, and mixing raw and cooked food are among the major causes of foodborne illnesses. In severe cases, adulterated or contaminated food can lead to kidney damage, blood infections and even death.
What are the penalties for selling or producing unsafe food?
•Fine up to ₹1 lakh for food production in unsanitary conditions.
•Penalty of ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh for possession of substances used for adulteration.
•There is a provision to provide compensation if the customer falls ill or dies.
•If death occurs, imprisonment for a minimum of 7 years to life. Fine of at least ₹10 lakh.
