More than ₹4.29 crore in fines has been collected over the past year in Ahmedabad as authorities stepped up enforcement against the use of banned plastic, according to official data.

The city enforces a complete ban on plastic materials below 120 microns thickness and 60 GSM. Despite the restriction, the civic body has been conducting daily inspection drives to curb violations.

According to data from the Solid Waste Management Department, a total of 20,926 establishments were sealed during the year for using prohibited plastic. Additionally, notices were issued to around 1.48 lakh units and individuals during routine enforcement campaigns.

Officials said that 9,626 kg of banned plastic was seized and subsequently destroyed as part of the drive.

The municipal corporation has also stated that the High Court recently directed major cities such as Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot to follow Ahmedabad’s model in implementing plastic waste management rules.
