Over 380 monthly malaria cases in Gujarat, only 96 in Ahmedabad in six years

Gujarat spends crores of rupees every year in controlling mosquito-borne diseases, but it will still take a while to eradicate them from the state. As the world celebrates Malaria Day on April 25, Gujarat reports on an average more than 380 malaria cases each month. However, the cases have been declining since 2019, as per the data.

From 2021 to February 2025, Gujarat recorded 18,469 malaria cases. In comparison, there were 22,114 cases in 2018, 13,883 cases in 2019, and 4,771 in 2020, indicating a significant decline in malaria cases since 2020.

In 2024, Gujarat reported 4,365 malaria cases and one death. Last year, Odisha recorded the highest number of malaria cases in the country at 68,893. Across India, a total of 2.57 lakh (2,57,000) malaria cases were reported last year, with 76 deaths.

According to the state health department, Gujarat has a malaria positivity rate of less than 1 per 1,000 people. As a result, Gujarat has been moved from Category-2 to Category-1 under the National Malaria Elimination Programme. In 2024, the health department screened over 18.1 crore patients with fever and collected blood samples for free diagnosis.

Tests are conducted to confirm whether a patient is malaria-positive. In hospitals, malaria patients receive radical treatment using medications like chloroquine and primaquine.

Only 96 malaria cases reported in Ahmedabad in 6 years

In Ahmedabad, 58 cases were reported in 2019, 20 in 2020, 5 in 2021, 5 in 2022, 2 in 2023, and 6 in 2024. Not a single malaria case has been reported in 2025. It has also been claimed that there have been no deaths due to malaria or dengue in the past five years in the district.

A project using AI-based drone technology to locate mosquito breeding sites and spray larvicide began in November 2024 in areas including Changodar GIDC, Sanand GIDC’s Sanathal, Navapura, Changodar, Moraiya, Vasna, Bol, Shiyavada, and Chharodi.
