Despite having an annual budget exceeding ₹15,000 crore, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) administration appears to be failing when it comes to sanitation. In just one month, AMC received 28,642 complaints regarding sewer overflows.
On one hand, roads are riddled with potholes, and rainwater fails to drain for hours. On the other, residents, particularly from the unprivileged and lower-income groups, are suffering amid overflowing sewage across multiple areas.
Ahmedabad’s sewage problem
In June, including the complaints of sewage overflows, AMC received 31,793 online complaints related to basic civic services. Another 4,360 complaints were related to waterlogging, bringing the total to 36,153 complaints.
There are 498 contractor units deployed across the city’s 48 wards to clean sewers. Although each unit is paid ₹50,000 per month, complaints about overflowing sewers continue to rise.
In central zones, including the Court Area, 99 units are active for sewer cleaning. Similarly, in Naroda, Kubernagar, and surrounding areas, 112 units are working. AMC claims that over ₹3 crore was spent on pre-monsoon sewer cleaning.
Ward-wise sewage works

| Saraspur | 40 |
| Kubernagar | 28 |
| Shahibaug | 27 |
| Dariapur | 27 |

In just one month, AMC received 6,180 complaints related to sewer overflow or blocked sewer lines from areas like Khadia, Dariyapur, Shahpur, Kalupur, and Jamalpur. Another 6,710 complaints came from Naroda, Saijpur, Kubernagar, Sardarnagar, Saraspur, and Rakhial areas.
The corporation also received 5,038 complaints from Naranpura, Paldi, Navrangpura, Sabarmati, and Wadaj. Meanwhile, Maninagar, Isanpur, Ghodasar, and nearby areas reported 4,825 complaints.
Despite crores being spent, the hardships faced by ordinary citizens are not decreasing, a leader from the opposition alleged.
