Over 18,000 pet dogs registered in Ahmedabad under rabies-free 2030 campaign
Labrador Retrievers top the list with 3,559 entries, followed by the German Shepherds and Shih Tzus

Since the launch of the online pet dog registration portal on January 1, 2025, 16,039 pet owners have registered 18,236 pet dogs through AMC’s official website, the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) of Amdavad Municipal Corporation stated on Thursday.
In an effort to make Ahmedabad a rabies-free city by 2030, over 18,000 pet dogs have been registered online under the ‘Rabies Free Ahmedabad City 2030’ initiative launched by AMC. The campaign is being conducted in line with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Dog Rules 2023, the National Action Plan for Dog-Mediated Rabies Elimination (NAPRE), and directives from the Supreme Court of India, Animal Welfare Board of India, and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The move aims to ensure better tracking, vaccination, and sterilisation of owned dogs, ultimately reducing stray dog population and controlling rabies transmission in the city.
Fee hike drives urgency in registration
Registrations initially saw a strong surge, with 14,583 dogs registered by May 31, 2025, when the fee was ₹200. A significant spike was noted between May 14 and 31, during which 11,032 dogs were registered.
As of June 1, the fee was revised to ₹500, and further increased to ₹1000 from August 1 to September 30, with a final jump to ₹2000 between October 1 and December 31, 2025, to encourage timely registration.
Most popular dog breeds in Ahmedabad
Among the 18,236 registered dogs, the Labrador Retriever tops the list with 3,559 entries, followed by the German Shepherd (1,359) and Shih Tzu (1,287). Other commonly registered breeds include:

Notably, the CNCD department team conducted door-to-door inspection of households in Ahmedabad and issued notice to owners who were yet to register their pets with AMC.
Documents required for online pet dog registration
- Aadhaar Card of the owner / Voter ID card
- Owner’s electricity bill or owner’s light bill (as proof of residence)
- Photograph of the owner, photograph of the pet dog, and a photograph of the place where the pet dog is kept
- Valid vaccination card of the pet dog issued by a registered veterinary doctor
- Rental agreement (if the owner resides in a rented property)
