Over 17,000 complaints of contaminated drinking water reported in Ahmedabad in one year

Ahmedabad continues to grapple with widespread complaints related to drinking water supply, with official figures showing that more than 17,800 complaints of contaminated water were recorded in the city over the past year.

According to available data, a total of 74,242 complaints related to drinking water services were registered in Ahmedabad during the last year. Of these, 17,847 complaints pertained specifically to contaminated water, highlighting the scale of the issue across various parts of the city.

The issue recently came under the spotlight after around 1,000 residents allegedly fell ill due to contaminated drinking water in the Ghatlodiya area. Separately, residents in another locality allegedly confronted civic officials during ongoing maintenance and inspection work linked to water pollution complaints.

The problem is not limited to a single area. Residents in parts of the city's historic walled city area have also reported receiving contaminated drinking water. Similar complaints have emerged from several newly developed localities, with concerns being raised over the condition of water and drainage infrastructure in different parts of Ahmedabad.

The figures have renewed focus on the city's water supply network and the need for timely maintenance, monitoring and rectification measures. Civic authorities have been undertaking inspections, pipeline repairs, desilting operations and other technical interventions in areas where contamination complaints have been reported.

Ahmedabad, one of Gujarat's largest urban centres, is represented by several elected representatives across municipal, state and parliamentary levels. Despite the extensive administrative and political presence, access to clean drinking water continues to remain a key civic concern for many residents.

The data indicating 17,847 contaminated water complaints and more than 74,000 overall water-related grievances underscores the challenges faced by the city's water distribution system and the importance of addressing the issue through sustained infrastructure improvements and monitoring.
