Over ₹11 Cr fined for rash driving in Ahmedabad, 2,161 licences suspended
Amid rising cases of fatal accidents caused by rash and wrong-side driving in Ahmedabad, authorities have come down hard on traffic violators.
In the past 18 months alone, ₹10.98 crore has been collected in fines from offenders for violations such as overspeeding, wrong-side driving, overloading, fitness issues, and fatal crashes. As a result, the driving licences of 2,161 motorists have been suspended for three to six months.
Meanwhile, in cases where Ahmedabad-based drivers were caught for dangerous driving in other states, 284 licences were revoked after local police collected fines and sent reports to the Ahmedabad RTO for further action.
The Gujarat High Court has repeatedly pulled up traffic police over increasing hit-and-run incidents, speeding-related deaths, and rising numbers of youths riding under the influence, without helmets, or on the wrong side of the road. The court has insisted on filing FIRs and strict measures instead of merely collecting fines, which have little deterrent effect.
Acting on this, Ahmedabad RTO has adopted a stricter approach since April 1, 2024. Between then and July 31, 2025, officials detained vehicles for a wide range of violations — including repeated traffic rule breaches, missing documents, and overloading — and issued stiff penalties.
