The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had planned road resurfacing and construction works worth ₹688.58 crore for 37 roads across the city’s West, North-West and South-West zones during the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26. However, in the past two years, only 10 roads have been completed at a cost of ₹142.62 crore, raising concerns over delays and lack of supervision.

The civic body awarded contracts to multiple agencies, with most of the work being executed by RKC Infrabuilt. Despite contracts being issued, ward-level supervision by municipal officials has reportedly been absent, leading to prolonged inconvenience for residents.

Road works are currently underway at 27 locations across wards including New Vadaj, Ranip, Chandlodia, Gota, Bodakdev, Chandkheda and Chalatej, leaving residents and commuters distressed. Locals have complained that roads have been dug up extensively, turning entire stretches into pothole-ridden zones.

Residents allege that once road resurfacing or construction contracts are awarded, ward-level municipal officials fail to monitor the work. When questioned, officials reportedly respond that the projects fall under the road project department, effectively passing responsibility. Critics say this reflects administrative apathy towards public hardship.

With the current term of the municipal corporation nearing its end, corporators from all parties-BJP, Congress and others-are rushing between zonal offices and the main civic office to complete pending works from their respective budgets. However, activists point out that corporators have little time to assess how many roads in their wards have been completely damaged in the name of development.

Following the closure of Subhash Bridge, traffic pressure has increased on Ashram Road, Nava Wadaj, Ranip, Shahibaug Circle and surrounding areas, worsening conditions for daily commuters and local residents alike.

Citizens have demanded stricter monitoring, faster completion of projects and accountability from both contractors and civic officials to ease the growing traffic and infrastructure crisis in Ahmedabad.
