At the ongoing Gujarat Assembly’s budget session, Congress MLA Amit Chavda raised concerns over the lack of functional CCTV cameras at several police stations across the state. He urged the government to address the issue.

In response, the government acknowledged that CCTV cameras at 340 police stations across Gujarat are currently non-functional as the warranty has expired.

The government further stated that they are considering issuing a new work order to resolve the issue and will soon implement measures to restore functioning of CCTV cameras in police stations.

This non-operational CCTV cameras in police stations is a violation of Supreme Court directives.

The Supreme Court had mandated in December 2020 that all police stations must maintain operational surveillance systems 24/7 to ensure accountability and prevent deaths in custody.

The apex court had also stipulated that recordings should be maintained for a minimum of 18 months to facilitate investigations into allegations of misconduct.

Following which, Gujarat High Court in 2024 had ordered the government to make CCTV cameras operational within the time frame provided by the court. However, no action has been taken to address this pressing issue.
