The nomination verification process for Tharad’s local body election is embroiled in controversy, with the opposition, including Aam Aadmi Party and independent candidates, alleging police pressure and favouritism for BJP candidates in Gujarat.

The AAP district president expressed strong dissatisfaction, claiming that democratic norms were being ignored. He alleged that candidate representatives were not being allowed to enter the verification premises and that the process was being reduced to mere formalities. He further stated that despite submitting affidavits on stamp papers worth ₹50 and ₹300, the administration was not cooperating.

Supporters of a Congress-backed independent candidate, Sedhabhai Abhabhai Thakor, reportedly accused the police of intimidation. They claimed that senior officials from Tharad Police were pressuring the candidate to withdraw his nomination, questioning his decision to contest the election. According to them, such actions amount to a direct violation of democratic principles and the rule of law.

The complainants further alleged bias on the part of the administration, claiming it was favouring BJP candidates. They pointed to delays and alleged harassment faced by Congress and independent candidates during verification, while BJP candidates’ processes were reportedly handled smoothly.

A legal representative with 27 years of experience warned that if the situation does not improve, a writ petition will be filed in the High Court, and the issue may also be taken up with the Bar Council.

With local body elections currently underway across Gujarat, the incident has intensified political tensions in the region. Opposition leaders have called for an impartial inquiry and have urged the state Home Minister and Chief Minister to intervene.
