‘One Nation-One Election’: JPC including Priyanka Gandhi begins three-day Gujarat Visit

A 39-member Joint Parliament Committee (JPC) on the ‘One Nation-One Election’ proposal has started a three-day visit to Gujarat from May 19 to 21, 2026. The committee includes Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, BJP MP Sambit Patra and BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj.

The committee is visiting the state to collect opinions on the proposed constitutional amendment for holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together across the country.

The committee will meet Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly officials and senior administrative officers in Gandhinagar. Political parties from the state have also been invited to present their views before the panel on May 20.

BJP and Congress share their views

BJP spokesperson Anil Patel said that Gujarat BJP fully supports the idea of ‘One Nation-One Election’. According to the party, simultaneous elections can reduce election expenses and improve governance. 

Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said the party will place its concerns before the committee. He stated that the issue is connected with the rights of the people and democratic processes, so all concerns will be discussed during the consultations. Officials from different departments are likely to share information about election management, security arrangements and financial planning during the meetings. The committee is collecting state level feedback before preparing recommendations on the proposed constitutional amendment bill.

The JPC's itinerary and key activities in the state include:

Leadership meetings: The delegation will meet with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly Speaker, and top state administrative officials.

Party consultations: The committee has invited various state political parties to present their formal views and feedback on simultaneous elections.

Civil society input: The panel will gather feedback on the (129) Constitutional Amendment Bill from legal experts, the judiciary, and civic organizations.

The committee will gather opinions from political parties, officials and experts before preparing its report on the proposed constitutional amendment.
