One in four properties in Ahmedabad registered in women’s names, data shows

Women now account for a quarter of all property ownership in Ahmedabad, according to recent registration data for 2024 and 2025, highlighting the impact of government incentives aimed at boosting female ownership.
A total of 2.93 lakh property sale documents were registered in the district over the two-year period, of which 74,614 were purchased in the names of women. This translates to 25% of all registered properties being owned by women. Authorities also reported that approximately ₹213 crore in registration fees was waived for such transactions.
Ahmedabad ranked highest in the state for women-led property purchases, followed by Surat and Rajkot. In Surat district, around 2.40 lakh sale documents were registered during the same period, with 66,457 properties bought by women. Registration fee concessions in these cases amounted to ₹134.95 crore.
Officials noted that the state government’s policy of offering reduced registration charges is intended to promote financial empowerment and increase women’s participation in property ownership. The initiative appears to be influencing buying patterns, particularly among middle- and upper middle-class families, many of whom are now registering properties in the names of wives, mothers or daughters.
In Gujarat, stamp duty for women stands at approximately 3.9%, compared with up to 4.9% for men. In addition to lower duties, several banks and housing finance companies offer preferential home loan interest rates to women borrowers, enabling significant long-term savings.
