Recently, an audio clip of a conversation between a policeman of Amreli and a bootlegger went viral, in which the policeman was allegedly asking the bootlegger for an instalment of ₹20,000 per month for selling liquor.

After listening to this clip, the district SP suspended that policeman. According to sources, it is being discussed that such officials are collecting an amount of ₹5-7 crores per month as monthly instalments from bootleggers in the ‘dry state’.

Corruption with the Nal se Jal Scheme

The central government’s important Nal se Jal scheme has allegedly been plagued by corruption in Gujarat. There have been huge scams in the purchase of pipes, paver blocks, pumping machines, taps, and other materials.

A scam related to the scheme was reportedly caught in two tribal districts of the state, Panchmahal and Dahod.

According to reports, in some places, water is not available due to a lack of power supply. As the fragile pipelines are broken, water is being wasted. Against 30 complaints in the district, the department has placed only one officer on suspension but no other actions have been taken.

Grant received worth ₹10 crore, work done worth ₹4 crore

Aravalli district’s independent MLA Dhavalsingh Jhala has complained of malpractice against former collector Narendra Meena.

According to Jhala, the government grant of the mines and minerals department has not been properly utilised. Out of the grant of ₹10 crore, only ₹4 crore worth of work has been done. There have been scams in the installation of RO plants, sports equipment, and CCTV if the sources are to be believed.

The MLA also reportedly expressed his plans to knock on the doors of the court regarding the matter.

The capacity of Gujarat’s major reservoirs is decreasing

A report shows that there has been a shocking decrease in the water capacity of 60 large reservoirs in Gujarat. The capacity of these reservoirs is 16,768 million cubic metres but due to accumulated silt, the water capacity has decreased by 14.31%.

Due to siltation, the capacity of reservoirs has decreased by 2400 million cubic metres. It is important to note that no official data has come out about the sediment collected in the Narmada reservoir, but according to experts, 4.96 crore tonnes of sediment has been filled in the Narmada reservoir in the last 62 years.

Since 2001, only four to five surveys have been done but no steps have been taken to remove the silt.

Glaring absence of industrialists at the Science City event

The event held at Science City on Sept 27 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Vibrant Summit was expected to welcome top businessmen of the country.

However, surprisingly, apart from Cadila’s Pankaj Patel and ArcelorMittal’s Lakshmi Mittal, no other big names were present. Big industrialists like Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, and Anand Mahindra were not present at the event.

An old ritual ignored in the Gujarat Assembly

Every year, leaders including the chief minister go to the huge picture of Vitthalbhai Patel, placed on the ground floor of the Gandhinagar Legislative Assembly and offer tributes to him on Sept 27, his death anniversary.

This year, the tradition was broken. As the Prime Minister was in Gujarat on Sept 27, most of the ministers and officials were reportedly busy, forgetting the death anniversary of a great leader.

Only in Gujarat: Games without a field

The government has already announced Khel Mahakumbh 2.0 but the question remains on how students will celebrate this festival in the schools that do not have playgrounds. There are 5,500 schools in Gujarat which do not have playgrounds.

In Ahmedabad alone, more than 700 schools do not have playgrounds. Also, there is a shortage of physical education teachers in schools.

A while ago, the education department had written to all the district education officers (DEO) of the state and directed them to provide playgrounds, but it has not been followed anywhere.
