OBC reservation announcements still pending after 3 months of Jhaveri Commission Report
Retired Justice K S Jhaveri handed over the report in April 2023
The report states the percentage of reserved seats for OBC in the local bodies of the government
After a huge uproar over the removal of Other Backward Castes (OBC) from local self-government (rural and urban) elections, the Gujarat government constituted the Jhaveri Commission in 2022 as per the Supreme Court directive. The chairman of the commission, retired Justice KS Jhaveri, submitted the report to CM Bhupendra Patel on Apr 14, 2023.
The commission has been constituted to determine the reservation ratio of the Other Backward Class (OBC) in the local bodies of self-governance.
Despite the submission of the report in April, the state government has not released the decided reservation of seats for OBC in the local bodies. The report, which was supposed to be submitted within 90 days, was extended twice.
OBC community awaits release of the report
In a meeting organised by ‘OBC Anamat Bachavo’, in Gandhinagar, opposition leader Amit Chavda alleged that though there is 52% of the OBC community in the state, the government seems to be anti-reservation.
The OBC community in Gujarat is expecting 27% reservation in the local bodies of the state government.
Due to the upcoming elections of local bodies after Navratri (Oct 2023), the Gujarat government is expected to publish the report at the earliest.
