The National Medical Commission (NMC) has retracted its recent notice that invalidated all postgraduate medical courses offered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) Mumbai. The initial notice, issued on Aug 22, declared CPS Mumbai as a non-governmental organization without the authority to recognize or approve medical courses.

This decision led to widespread confusion and concern, particularly in Gujarat, where CPS courses are widely offered.

The reversal comes just a day after the initial notice was issued, following a Bombay High Court order.

The state’s medical council had already raised concerns with the state government regarding the recognition and admission status of these programs.

CPS Mumbai offers a variety of postgraduate medical education programs, including five-year membership (MCPS) courses, three-year fellowship (FCPS) courses, and two-year diploma courses.

These programs are conducted in various hospitals across Gujarat and Rajasthan. In Gujarat alone, 37 hospitals, including 25 district hospitals and 15 private hospitals, offer CPS diploma courses, which were officially recognized by the state health department in 2011.

With a total of 254 seats, CPS courses play a significant role in Gujarat’s medical education landscape. The state medical entrance committee annually oversees admissions for these programs. The NMC’s reversal still leaves many questions unanswered about the future of CPS courses and their implications for upcoming admissions.

The Gujarat Medical Council is now awaiting further guidance from the state government to clarify the situation and determine the path forward for CPS medical education in the state.
