NMC cancels 200 seats of Swaminarayan Medical College in Kalol over corruption allegations

Close on the heels of the arrest of 35 officials in corruption-related cases from medical colleges across Gujarat, the National Medical Commission (NMC), following inspections, has cancelled 250 medical seats in the state for operating illegally or engaging in corrupt practices. These include all the 200 seats at Swaminarayan Medical College in Kalol and another 50 medical seats of a college in Amreli and another in Vadodara.
Over 25,000 students have applied for medical college seats – 1,600 more than last year.
The NMC released the list of approved seats for all medical colleges for the academic year 2025-26 on Saturday. According to this list, only the approved colleges will be allowed to admit students.
Out of 6,958 MBBS seats in Gujarat, 250 have been reduced for this year.
Swaminarayan Medical College in Kalol, a private college with 200 seats, has had its seats reduced to zero, meaning the college will not admit any medical students or conduct classes this year.
Additionally, seats have been reduced in Shantabaa Medical College in Amreli and Dr Kiran C Patel Medical College in Sayajipura.
Nationwide, nine medical colleges have had their seats reduced to zero.
With these reductions, students aspiring to pursue MBBS this year are expected to face significant challenges in securing admission.
