The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated plans to construct a six-lane greenfield highway between Ahmedabad and Godhra to improve connectivity with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

NHAI has floated a tender for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed 120-km highway. According to sources, the road is planned with a right of way of 60 metres and designed to be expandable to eight lanes in the future, depending on traffic demand.

At present, motorists travelling from Godhra to Ahmedabad via the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway have to take a longer route through Vadodara and then use the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. The proposed highway is expected to provide a more direct link between the two cities.

Officials said a greenfield highway refers to a completely new road constructed on undeveloped land, unlike projects that involve widening existing roads. Such highways are typically designed for higher speeds, with provisions allowing vehicles to travel at up to 120 kmph.

The alignment is planned to bypass major towns and villages to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion.
