Surat police intercepted another such international consignment of drugs on Jan 7 under “No Drugs in Surat City” campaign. The cops busted a long haul heading to Maharashtra’s Pune, all the way from Nepal via land route.
Police also arrested two Nepal citizens with drugs and raw materials worth lakhs, while a hunt for other operatives in this case was launched.
Busting an international racket
Acting over a tip-off received by Saroli police inspector (PI) SA Desai, constables Bhavesh Hadiya and Ganpat arrested Vomlal Dharti, 52, and his son’s brother-in-law, Avrodh Dharti, 21, who were headed towards the city’s Simada check post from Valthan canal late on the evening of Jan 7.
Materials and goods worth ₹11.19 lakh were confiscated from the duo, which included a total of 5.9 kg of charas worth ₹8.85 lakh, 2.995 kg of its raw materials worth ₹2.25 lakh, two mobile phones, Indian and Nepalese currencies, cash, and a weighing machine.
As per the police, both Vomlal and Avrodh are found to be residents of Nisi village in Nepal’s Baglung district.
During investigation it was revealed that three years ago, Vomlal came into contact with an individual named Sandeep, who was working as a stone breaker in Jammu.
Sandeep had offered Vomlal a significant amount at that time to deliver drugs.
Sandeep ordered 8-9 kg of charas and raw materials from Vomlal and asked to contact him after reaching Pune.
Vomlal arranged for it from his vicinity and left for Pune from Nepal in a private travel bus along with Avrodh.
Perpetrators caught in Surat
Fearing police inspection on their journey near Surat, the duo got off the bus near the national highway and aimed to catch another Pune-bound bus to evade the authorities.
Following this, they were caught after police set up a check post in the perimeter.
Police interrogation further revealed that this was the first such trip made by the accused, and Sandeep was a mediator in this case.
Saroli police registered a case under the Narcotic-Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and declared Sandeep a ‘wanted’ and have launched a deeper probe into this case.
