Last year, eight students from Gujarat made it to the top 100, with the highest rank being 33rd. There was controversy surrounding the result last year when 67 students (including 4 from Gujarat) secured a perfect score of 720, leading to widespread suspicion of malpractice and resulting in court cases. After a legal verdict, a revised result was released, recognising 17 students with top ranks, none from Gujarat.
This year, 81,905 students from Gujarat had registered for NEET, of which 80,151 appeared and 50,040 qualified. Compared to last year, 7,192 fewer students cleared the test, and the overall result has dropped by 4%. Consequently, the merit for medical admissions is expected to fall significantly.
In Gujarat, the pass percentage stood at 62.43% this year, as 50,040 out of 80,151 students cleared the exam. Last year, the pass percentage was 66.23%, with 57,232 students qualifying.
This year, 53,025 students appeared in Gujarati medium, compared to 58,838 last year. Notably, this year’s NEET topper, Mahesh Kumar from Rajasthan, scored 686 marks — 34 marks lower than last year’s top score of 720. The qualifying cutoff is also 16 marks lower. While there are more top scorers this year, the overall results have declined significantly, hence the merit list is expected to drop.
Currently, Gujarat has 6,958 medical seats, and with 3–4 new colleges expected, the number of seats may increase slightly.
The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for admission to medical, dental, ayurveda, and homeopathy (including nursing where recognised) courses after Class 12 Science was conducted across India on May 5.
The exam was conducted in 13 languages across India and abroad. Out of the 22,76,068 registered students nationwide, 22,09,318 appeared, and 12,39,531 qualified. Last year, there were 24,06,079 registrations, with 23,33,162 students appearing and 13,15,853 qualifying. This year 79,332 fewer students passed compared to last year.
