Narol electrocution deaths: Congress demands action against civic officials, alleges AMC negligence
Protests were led by Shehzad Khan Pathan, Leader of Opposition in the AMC

Tension prevailed in Ahmedabad’s Narol area on Monday after a young couple died of electrocution while riding an Activa scooter through waterlogged Matangalini Gali. The tragedy has sparked outrage over alleged negligence by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), with Congress leaders demanding action against responsible civic officers.

According to police, the deceased were identified as Rajan Singal (33) and his wife, Ankitaben (27), residents of Rudra Green Society in Narol. The couple was returning home after visiting Rajan’s ailing father, who is undergoing treatment for a lung condition in the hospital, when their scooter came in contact with electrified water on the road. Both died on the spot.

The deaths triggered protests led by Shehzad Khan Pathan, Leader of Opposition in the AMC, along with 10–15 Congress workers. The delegation met Sector-2 Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Jaipalsinh Rathod, demanding strict action against AMC officials. “Even after Ahmedabad has been declared a Smart City, conditions in Narol are worse than in villages. This tragedy exposes the civic body’s gross negligence,” Pathan said.

In a symbolic protest, the bodies of the couple were brought to the AMC South Zone office in Maninagar, where family members and supporters raised slogans against the corporation and locked the office premises. Police prevented protesters from entering the building, leading to heated exchanges and a scuffle at the office gates.

As no senior officer initially came forward, the grieving family and Congress leaders staged a sit-in protest on the road outside. Hours later, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (South Zone) Bharat Parmar came out of the office and accepted a memorandum from the family, who demanded dismissal of negligent officers, registration of a police complaint and criminal action.

Later, the bodies were taken back to Rudra Green Society in Narol for final rites.

The police have registered a case of accidental death, and further investigation is underway.
