One of the state universities, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU), suffered a big blow to its treasury as the authorities skipped registration in a central grant scheme.

The negligence of the MSU administration regarding the PM-USHA (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) scheme offering a grant of up to ₹100 cr by the centre’s department of education has become the talk of the town in academic discourse.

The PM-USHA scheme has recently been launched by the prime minister Narendra Modi, ‘with the vision to attain higher levels of access, equity, and excellence in the State higher education system with greater efficiency, transparency, accountability, and responsiveness,’ according to the government.

A grant of ₹100 cr each was approved for Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and Saurashtra University under this scheme, as per media reports.

While other state universities that applied for the scheme got grants of ₹20 cr to ₹100 cr, the MSU administration skipped the application for this scheme.
