National Highway closed
To ensure timely assistance and immediate response to any sudden situations, traffic has been closed on the National Highway from Samkhiali to Malia after consulting with the administration of Kutch and Surendranagar districts.
Vehicle traffic is being diverted from Samkhiali to Radhanpur. The collector has appealed to people for cooperation. Additionally, due to people gathering on the bridge to view the Machhu River, traffic issues have arisen in the city. Therefore, the district collector has requested residents of Morbi not to visit the river area or the bridge for their safety and to avoid traffic problems.
The district collector stated that based on the conditions of last night (Aug 26), it was decided to release 50,000 cubic metres of water from the Machhu-2 Dam.
However, due to heavy rainfall in Wankaner and upstream areas, 118,000 cubic metres of water was released in the morning, which was later increased to 2,67,000 cubic metres.
As a result, the Machhu River is receiving water, with a possibility to entering into Morbi city. Therefore, low-lying areas have been evacuated since last night.
Furthermore, the collector mentioned that 10 special teams have been formed for relocation. These teams are carrying out relocation activities on the ground.
Around 30 shelters have been established in the district for relocation, where arrangements for accommodation, food, and drinking water are made. Health teams are also on standby. A survey of potentially affected areas and villages in Morbi district has been conducted, and teams of officers including mamlatdar and taluka development officers have been deployed.
