Tensions have escalated at the Model Hostel (KGBV) in Tharad of Vav–Tharad district in Gujarat following an administrative dispute. Around 250 hostel students staged a protest early on Monday, opposing the appointment of new warden Ashaben. Chanting slogans like “Warden Ashaben will not be accepted,” the students sat in protest in the hostel premises, drawing attention across the region.

The protesting students allege that Ashaben’s behaviour was highly inhumane during her previous tenure as warden. They claim she used abusive language, referring to students as animals, and subjected them to physical and mental harassment over minor issues. They also alleged that her family members would come to the hostel and harass students.

For the past year, Sonalben had been serving as the warden, under whose supervision students felt a sense of safety and care. However, her transfer and the reappointment of the controversial Ashaben have triggered widespread anger.

Parents have also joined the protest, making serious allegations of corruption against Ashaben. They stated that during her earlier tenure, there were multiple complaints filed even on the CM portal regarding issues like insects found in food, misappropriation of stationery supplies, and irregularities in basic facilities. Parents questioned why someone with such a controversial background has been reappointed.

Despite ongoing examinations, the students remain firm in their demand for justice. Their key demands include the immediate removal of Ashaben as warden, reinstating Sonalben or appointing a neutral authority, and an inquiry against the district gender officer who has allegedly not visited the hostel in the last three months.

The students have warned that if authorities fail to take prompt action, they will boycott exams and go on a hunger strike. Meanwhile, local administrative officials are attempting to mediate and resolve the issue.
