MLA Jignesh Mevani demands blueprint to tackle alcohol–drug menace in Gujarat, questions govt’s silence

MLA Jignesh Mevani has intensified his attack on the Gujarat government, accusing the Home Department of failing to curb the rising spread of alcohol and drug trafficking in the state.
He reiterated his demand for the Home Minister’s resignation, alleging that despite responding to his statements, neither the Home Minister nor the DGP (Director General of Police) has assured the public that drugs and liquor will be prevented from circulating in Gujarat.
Mevani claimed that drugs worth ₹64,000 crore have been seized in the state so far, and that ‘Made in Gujarat’ drugs are now beginning to surface. He further stated that the drug trail in a recent seizure from Mizoram has been traced back to Gujarat, and that consignments are even being transported from Gujarat to other states.
Mevani questioned why only constables or head constables face action in drug and liquor cases while district-level police officers remain untouched. He also highlighted unresolved issues such as grade pay, fixed pay, and union rights for police employees, for which Congress has already made representations.
Criticising Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Mevani said the CM is holding a ‘chintan shibir’ in Valsad while refusing to speak even a word on the drug-alcohol crisis. He alleged that youth are being destroyed, families are suffering, and young women are being widowed due to addiction-related tragedies yet the government is silent.
Congress announced plans to launch a toll-free helpline for citizens to report drug and liquor activity. Party workers’ names and phone numbers will also be released district-wise to assist the public in filing complaints related to liquor and gambling.
