Primary government schools in Gujarat is dealing with a serious issue of insufficient teaching staff, where 1,606 primary government schools has only one teacher.

This remark was made by the state education minister Dr Kuber Dindor in a reply to the opposition.

This issue was brought up during the Question Hour session on Feb 12 over a query raised during the state assembly by the opposition Congress MLAs.

Dindor maintained his stance that the government would recruit teachers immediately.

He reasoned that the hometown preferences provided to teachers in the district-wise transfer camps have led to such a circumstance.

Dindor further added that ‘Gyan Sahayak’ teachers will be appointed at such schools to safeguard the children’s education.

Along with this, he said, a teacher for every 30 students is being maintained at these schools under the right to education (RTE), 2009 Act.

Many of these schools also have an insufficient number of students, which has led to the recruitment of only one teacher.

As per the data provided by the minister, such schools are found to be mostly situated in the Chhotaudepur district.

In March 2022, there were 906 such schools across the state.

Congress leader and MLA from Vav, Geni Thakor, demanded that instead of the promises, the government give an affirmation over stopping such schools from increasing in numbers.

Such conditions in government schools have left parents and guardians with no other option than to admit their children to private schools by paying hefty fees.
