A massive fire broke out in more than 35 scrap warehouses in the Dungri Phalia area of Vapi late on Saturday night. The presence of large quantities of chemicals and plastics made the fire fierce. Firefighters controlled the blaze after several hours. Fortunately, no one was injured. The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation.

The fire started from one scrap godown and quickly spread to nearby warehouses. The high flames could be seen  from far away. Since warehouses are close to residential areas, people living nearby were evacuated as a safety measure.

Fire brigade teams from Vapi Municipal Corporation, GIDC, notified areas, and nearby places like Daman and Silvassa reached the spot. They sprayed water from all sides and worked for hours to bring the fire under control. Police teams also arrived at the scene.

Local residents claim that there are frequent fire incidents at the scrap warehouses in Vapi and nearby areas. Earlier, the municipal corporation had begun removing illegal warehouses by issuing notices. But in the Dungra area, the incomplete process resulted in the illegal warehouses flourishing. With such dangerous warehouses running in the middle of residential areas, there is a lot of anger among locals against the lax policy of the administration.
