Marriage conflicts on rise as Guj courts see more than 75 cases every day
27K cases in family court related to marriage disputes, 50% rise in two years
In 2023, 27,194 cases of marital disputes were registered in the family court in Gujarat. In the last two years alone, there has been an increase of 50% in cases of conflicts in married life.
18,508 cases were filed in 2021 in 36 family courts in Gujarat. Thus, the number of cases filed per day was 51. In 2022, 24,910 cases were registered in the family court, and the number was 27,194 for 2023. Thus, in 2023, 75 cases were registered in the family court every day.
22,124 cases were disposed of in 2021, 29,557 in 2022 and 30,084 cases in 2023 in family court.
At present 31,954 cases are pending in the family courts of the state. More than 10,000 divorce cases are believed to be pending in the family court of Ahmedabad.
Numbers for India
Among the states, Uttar Pradesh is at the top with 2.87 lakh cases, followed by Kerala with 84,610 cases and Punjab with 68,711 cases in 2023.
657 cases were registered in the family court of West Bengal in 2023. Thus, the number of cases filed in family courts in West Bengal is low as compared to other major states.
For India, 4.97 lakh cases were registered in 2021, 7.27 lakh cases in 2022 and 8.25 lakh cases in 2023 in 812 family courts across the country.
As of 2023, 11.43 lakh cases are pending in the family courts of the country.
