Seven months after the Mandal’s controversial cataract tragedy where 17 patients lost their sight due to doctor’s negligence, the victims still await the compensation from the government of Gujarat.

The patients will meet Gujarat’s Health Minister Rushikesh Patel today demanding the compensation.

The victims also seek to cancel the registration of Shri Ramanand Hospital, where the incident took place in January. The victims demand a hearing of the case in a fast-track court, seeking to set an example out of the trustees and doctors of the hospital.

On January 10, 2024, eye surgeries were performed at Shri Ramanand Hospital in Mandal, Viramgam district. After three days, many patients had difficulty seeing, as a result, five patients were referred to Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.

On the 16th, 12 more patients were brought to Ahmedabad. Finally, 17 patients lost their sight. Following the state government's order, a police complaint was also filed on Feb 5, 2024.

17 victims of the Mandal blindness will meet the Health Minister today to make a representation for compensation. Notably, the similar victims in Amreli's botched-up eye surgery case were awarded ₹10 lakh compensation.
