Man throws acid on wife, attempts suicide in Surat court

In a  shocking incident at the Surat District Seva Sadan Court on Friday, a man allegedly threw acid on his wife during a court hearing and later attempted suicide by consuming poison. The incident created panic and chaos in the court premises.

As per preliminary information, a maintenance case had been ongoing for some time between Ayurvedic doctor Vinod Bhanushali and his wife. On Friday, the hearing of the case was scheduled in Court No. 6 on the fifth floor of the Seva Sadan building.

During the proceedings, the woman was seated in the front row of the courtroom. Her husband, Vinod Bhanushali, who came from the back row, allegedly took out a bottle of acid and threw it at her.

The attack was so sudden that those present in the courtroom had little time to react. The woman suffered severe burns. Some of the inflammable liquid also reportedly fell on lawyers close by and other people present in the courtroom, leading to panic.

Soon after the attack, the accused allegedly consumed poison in an attempt to take his own life. Both the injured woman and the accused husband were immediately rushed to Surat Civil Hospital.

The police quickly reached the spot and seized the acid bottle and other evidence from the spot.

The incident has also raised serious concerns about security at the court complex. Questions are being asked on how a person entered a sensitive location like a courtroom with a bottle of acid despite security checks.
