On receiving obscene video calls from an unknown number, several anganwadi workers in Gujarat’s Bharuch had filed a complaint with the cybercrime police. The caller would allegedly flash during these calls. Acting on the complaint, police arrested a youth from near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
Police said the man was harassing women across Gujarat with his obscene acts during video calls. More than 35 Anganwadi workers in Bharuch received such calls late at night from unknown numbers. The explicit videos and indecent acts had caused distress and tension in their homes. The victims informed their regional organisation head, who advised them to file a complaint with Bharuch Cybercrime Police Station.
Investigators traced the number to Gurjit Singh, son of Mehil Singh Ray Sikh, a resident of Jalalabad in Firozpur district, Punjab, close to the India-Pakistan border. Evidence from his mobile phone revealed he had targeted not only women in Bharuch but across Gujarat.
A team from Bharuch Cybercrime, led by PI V R Bharwad and PSI K M Chaudhary travelled to Punjab, conducted a raid, and brought the accused to Bharuch for further investigation.
