Man killed after civic garbage collection van rams two-wheelers in Jamalpur, driver arrested
A 50-year-old man was killed and at least two others injured after a municipal garbage collection van rammed into two two-wheelers in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area early on Thursday. The incident took place during routine door-to-door waste collection operations by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred near the Pagthia area of Jamalpur around 6 am, when the van lost control and hit two two-wheelers. The impact caused one of the riders, identified as Mohammadbhai (50), to fall and suffer severe head injuries. He died on the spot.
Local residents told police that two to three others sustained minor injuries. “Following the collision, the van driver attempted to flee the scene but was caught by local residents and handed over to the police,” an official from the E-Division traffic police said.
The deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem examination, and his family has been informed, police added.
Traffic Police Inspector V K Desai, who is investigating the incident, said, “We have taken the driver, identified as Rahul Parmar, into custody. As per preliminary information, two others sustained minor injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital. Their statements will be recorded after medical attention.”
An ambulance was called immediately after the accident, and the injured were taken to hospital. Police said the van involved in the accident belongs to the municipal corporation and was part of its routine waste collection fleet.
An FIR will be registered under relevant sections of the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act, said officials, adding that the van will also undergo mechanical inspection to ascertain if a technical fault led to the loss of control.
