A 34-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after slashing the veins of his hand with a piece of glass near a residential society in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area.

The incident came to light nearly 12 hours later when local residents spotted the body near a bench outside Yogeshwar Row House behind Wonder Point in Ramol and informed the police.

Police identified the deceased as Ghanshyam Prajapati, a resident of Vastral, who lived with his brother and sister-in-law. He was unmarried.

Officials of Ramol Police Station said preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased may have been under the influence of intoxicants before the incident.

Ghanshyam was seen sitting near the bench outside Yogeshwar Row House late on the night of May 24. Investigators suspect that he was lying near the area in an intoxicated condition when a passer-by on a motorcycle noticed him.

Based on CCTV footage collected from the area, police said the biker allegedly helped the man onto the bench before leaving the spot.

Investigators believe that sometime afterwards, the deceased allegedly used a broken piece of glass to slit the veins of his right hand in public.

The body was discovered Monday morning by residents of the society, who alerted the police. Officers subsequently reached the scene and sent the body for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation.

Officials said the deceased appeared to have been leading a wandering lifestyle in recent months. His mobile phone and wallet have been seized as part of the investigation.

Police have also begun recording statements of the deceased’s family members as well as local residents in an attempt to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.

Investigators said the exact reason behind the alleged suicide has not yet been established.
