Man falls into open gutter on Ahmedabad's Makarba Road, youth rescues elderly victim

A major mishap was averted on Wednesday night after an elderly man fell into an open gutter near the Torrent Power office on Makarba Road in Ahmedabad, prompting a local youth to climb down and rescue him.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in a poorly lit stretch of the road where there are no functioning streetlights and the gutter was left uncovered. Residents said the elderly man slipped and fell straight into the opening, which had reportedly been left exposed for several days despite repeated complaints to civic authorities.

A young passer-by, noticing the commotion, immediately climbed into the gutter and managed to pull the man out with the help of locals. The victim sustained minor injuries but was safely brought out due to the swift action of the youth, witnesses said.

Residents of the area have alleged serious negligence on the part of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), stating that both the absence of streetlights and the missing gutter lid have created a persistent hazard for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Following the incident, locals temporarily covered the gutter on their own, warning that a more serious accident could occur if AMC does not take immediate corrective measures.

Residents plan to submit a written complaint to the civic body, demanding urgent repairs, restoration of streetlights, and regular monitoring of open drains in the locality.
