Ahmedabad Traffic Police have launched a detailed investigation following the death of a 28-year-old man in a late-night accident on the Ranip railway flyover. The victim's friend, however, attributes the fatality to inadequate safety measures and poor infrastructure maintenance on the flyover.
The deceased, identified as Kishan Sunilbhai Vachheta, was riding his Activa scooter with his wife, Komalben, late on Friday night when they were hit from behind by a four-wheeler on the Balolnagar bridge section near Ranip. Kishan was flung off the flyover and sustained critical head and body injuries. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital by a 108 ambulance but was declared dead by doctors around 3.30 am on Saturday. His wife suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
The victim’s friend, Apurva Parmar, expressed strong resentment against the authorities, alleging negligence in ensuring basic safety on the flyover. “If proper side railings or protective barriers had been installed on the bridge, my friend would not have fallen from such a height,” Parmar said. He pointed out that several flyovers on the SG Highway have protective railings to prevent vehicles from plunging off, but similar safety arrangements are absent on the Ranip bridge.
Parmar also alleged that CCTV cameras installed by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation on the flyover were not functioning. “Had the cameras been operational, it would have helped in monitoring traffic violations and in fixing responsibility immediately after the accident,” he said, demanding strict action against the car driver involved in the crash.
Meanwhile, the city’s L Division of Traffic Police have initiated an intensive investigation into the accident. An accident research team visited the spot on Saturday, carried out a detailed inspection of the site and marked the accident location with colour indicators. Officials said the team collected physical evidence from the scene to reconstruct the sequence of events.
According to the police complaint, the accident occurred around 11.30 pm on January 30, when an unidentified four-wheeler was allegedly driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, hitting Kishan’s scooter from behind as he was travelling from Balolnagar towards Chandkheda via New Ranip.
A case has been registered at the ‘L’ Traffic Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act, including provisions related to rash driving, causing grievous hurt and causing death by negligence. Police said efforts are underway to identify and trace the four-wheeler involved, and further legal action will follow based on the findings of the investigation.
