Man brandishes knife from car sunroof after accident at Sabarmati D-Cabin

Panic ensued in Sabarmati’s D-Cabin area in Ahmedabad late at night when a car driver caused an accident near Gitanjali Flats, prompting a crowd to gather at the scene. In a shocking display, the driver opened the sunroof of his vehicle, stood up, and brandished a knife in the air, reportedly to intimidate the onlookers. The incident, captured on video, quickly went viral on social media, prompting the Sabarmati police to register a case under provisions relating to unlawful possession of weapons.
According to police sources, the driver, identified as Bhaskar Vyas, a resident of Hariom Section 1, D-Cabin, was traced following the viral footage. Upon questioning, he admitted to causing the accident and brandishing the knife to disperse the crowd that had gathered at the scene. A knife was recovered from his possession during the investigation.
“The accused displayed a sharp knife despite restrictions on carrying weapons under the Commissioner of Police’s notification. Legal action has been initiated, and an investigation is underway,” said a senior officer at Sabarmati Police Station.
Residents recalled that the accident had created widespread panic, with onlookers attempting to intervene as the driver allegedly brandished the knife from his car’s sunroof. While the Sabarmati police have registered a case for possession of a prohibited weapon, questions remain over why the L-Division Traffic Police have not filed any case in connection with the accident itself.
A Traffic Police official, PI S N Patel, confirmed that no formal complaint had been received by his station regarding the accident and that social media was the source of initial information.
Preliminary reports indicate that the car was being driven at high speed when the accident occurred, causing anger and alarm among local residents. The driver’s subsequent display of the knife was captured on video, which led to his identification and the police action. Authorities are now conducting further inquiries to determine whether additional legal provisions apply.
