A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault his younger brother’s wife at their residence in Ahmedabad’s Isanpur area, police said on Monday.

The accused was arrested after the 22-year-old woman lodged a complaint at Isanpur Police Station, accusing her brother-in-law of repeatedly harassing her and attempting to force physical relations.

According to police officials, the woman had married her husband in a love marriage about two years ago and subsequently moved to the Isanpur area. Her husband works at a shop in the Lati Bazaar market, while the accused elder brother, who is reportedly unemployed, spent most of his time at home.

Police said the woman alleged that a few days ago, when she was alone at home, the accused approached her and proposed that she enter into a physical relationship with him. Shocked by the suggestion, she immediately refused. Fearing family conflict, she initially chose not to inform her husband or mother-in-law about the incident.

Taking advantage of her silence, the accused allegedly attempted to repeat the act again on March 8, when the woman was alone in the house.

According to the complaint, the accused allegedly tried to force himself on her and grabbed her, during which her clothes were torn. The woman raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to gather outside the house. Her husband also returned home during the commotion and intervened, police said.

Following the incident, the woman approached the police and lodged a complaint accusing her brother-in-law of molestation and attempted sexual assault.

Assistant Commissioner of Police N. K. Vyas said the accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway.

Police said the accused had previously worked as a rented auto-rickshaw driver but had been unemployed for some time.

Investigators are questioning him to establish the sequence of events and determine whether there were any earlier instances of harassment. Further action in the case will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, officials said.
