Ahmedabad’s suburban area of the south-west zone has been battling with congestion issues during peak hours for months. The traffic woes are about to end as the much awaited Makarba underpass will soon be inaugurated by the authorities.
The railway level crossing underpass ‘LC26’ near Makarba Lake has been constructed at a cost of ₹3.15 cr.
With an aim to set the gauge conversion and crossing-less railway lines, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had completed the LC26 underpass up to 80% by August 2023.
The work on roller-compacted concrete (RCC) road structures on both approaches started on Apr 29 last year.
The LC26 underpass will be a boon for the traffic to and fro between SG Highway and Makarba Gam. A total of 134.46m length and 17 m width have been kept on the SG Highway approach side and 11.57m width on the Makarba Gam approach side.
The carriageway width at the SG Highway side has been kept at 7.50 m and 7.10m at the Makarba side.
The underpass will facilitate a large number of corporate commuters in the areas of Kataria Automobile Road, Corporate Road, and Prahladnagar, as well as schoolgoers.
The Makarba railway signal personnel present at the site had said that passenger trains cross at 5.30 p.m. and between 7 -7.30 p.m. The scheduled and unscheduled train crossings could be a major contributor to the bottleneck.
The heavy congestion, coupled with noise and air pollution, is likely to end soon with the estimated inauguration of the yet-to-be-named underpass in Makarba, the ‘LC26 underpass’.
