Low response to pet dog registration in Ahmedabad despite extended deadline
Ahmedabad continues to see poor compliance with pet dog registration rules, with only 18,692 dogs registered in the past year despite an estimated pet population of over 50,000.
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has now extended the registration deadline to March 31, 2026.
Pet dog registration, vaccination and compliance rules were made mandatory from January 1, 2025. While the initial registration fee was ₹200 per dog, it has since been increased to ₹2,000.
Officials said lack of cooperation from pet owners remains a concern, especially following recent dog attack incidents, including a fatal case involving a child.
Data shows Labradors account for the highest number of registrations, followed by German Shepherds and Shih Tzus. The civic body has also been forced to reissue tenders for stray dog population surveys after receiving no bids in the previous round.
