Liver transplants in Gujarat rise 30% in a year, doctors cite lifestyle factors

The number of liver transplant cases in Gujarat has increased sharply, with procedures rising by around 30% in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to doctors at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad’s Asarwa.
Data from the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) at the Civil Medicity campus shows that 367 liver transplants have been performed at the facility over the past five years, with nearly 90% of the recipients being men.
Hospital records indicate that the highest number of transplants was performed in patients aged 41-50 years, with 129 men and 5 women, and 111 patients in the 51–60 age group.
Doctors say the liver plays a crucial role in the human body, helping digest food, absorb vitamins and minerals, and detoxify harmful substances that enter the bloodstream. However, increasing lifestyle-related health issues are contributing to the rising number of liver disease cases.
Pranjal Modi, director of IKDRC, said that the number of liver transplants has steadily increased in recent years.
“A total of 367 liver transplants have been performed in the past five years. In 2021, 56 such procedures were carried out, whereas the number has risen to 86 in 2025,” he said.
According to doctors, factors such as changing lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits and excessive consumption of fried foods are among the major reasons for the growing incidence of liver disease requiring transplantation.
