Making it in the coveted list of the most successful artists in India, is the Vadodara-based painter, poet and art critic, Gulammohammed Sheikh. Sheikh is ranked fourth in London’s Hurun research institute’s India Art List 2023.
The list ranked these artists based on the income generated through their works, whether through selling or auctioning them.
Vadodara’s Gulammohammed Sheikh generates fourth highest income in the country as an artist
The 86-year-old Sheikh, is a painter, poet, and art critic who has registered a staggering income of ₹17.88 cr.
Sheikh has the most expensive work of art amongst the other artists in the top 10 list, up to nearly ₹16.9 cr.
The well-renowned artist is an alma mater of the MS University of Baroda who holds a Masters degree in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts.in . He has a career spanning four decades in the arts, with many of his works on display at various locations across the globe. A poet himself, Sheikh liked the writings of Kabir which shows in his works too. A lot of Sheikh’s works is inspired by the words of Kabir.
Sheikh was felicitated with the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014. Sheikh was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati literature in 2022.
Sculptor Anish Kapoor: the most successful Indian artist
As per the list released by Hurun research institute, British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor was ranked as the top-most-earning artist in India, with his income at nearly ₹91 cr.
The Mumbai-born artist has emerged at the top of this list for the fifth consecutive year.
Kapoor’s most expensive artwork was sold at around ₹9.3cr last year at an auction. The 69-year-old sculptor is known for his many works, including Chicago’s ‘Cloud Gate’, Nottingham’s ‘Sky Mirror’, etc.
In 2014, Kapoor controversially bought exclusive rights to use the colour titled ‘Vantablack’, also known as ‘the blackest of the black’, which is known to absorb 99.965% of the light around it. In response to that, another artist Stuart Semple developed “pinkest pink” accessible to all but Kapoor. Their clash highlights artistic freedom, copyright, and the boundaries of creative expression.
