A truck carrying a large consignment of liquor overturned near Sanand in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, causing hundreds of bottles to spill across the road and triggering a scramble among local residents to collect them before police intervened.

According to police, the incident occurred on the Muni Ashram Road near Sanand when a Rajasthan-registered truck, travelling from Kadi towards Sanand, lost control while crossing a recently constructed road hump. The vehicle overturned, resulting in liquor bottles being strewn across the road.

Eyewitnesses said that soon after the accident, several locals rushed to the spot and attempted to pick up the scattered bottles. On being alerted, a police team rushed to the location, dispersed the crowd and took custody of the seized liquor and the vehicle.

Confirming the incident, a senior police official said that the police received information about the overturned truck and immediately deployed a convoy to the spot. “The liquor-laden truck had overturned on the Muni Ashram Road. We are verifying where the consignment originated from and its intended destination. Further details are being ascertained,” the officer said.

Police said that the seized bottles and other material are being counted and documented. A case is being registered under relevant provisions of the law, and further investigation is underway to determine the source of the liquor and those involved in its transportation.

Traffic on the stretch was briefly affected following the accident but was restored after the truck was removed and the road cleared, police added.
