Leopard mauls a sleeping farmer to death in Gir Somnath’s Lakhapara village

In a tragic incident in the Gir belt’s Veraval, a leopard mauled a farmer who was sleeping near the farm.

Naranbhai Pithiya was guarding a newly-harvested urad crop heap in his field in Lakhapara, Sutrapada. When he was sleeping beside the heap in the night, a leopard approached silently and attacked him before he could resist. The leopard clamped its jaws around the farmer and dragged him about half a kilometre away from the field, where it strangled him to death.

When Pithiya did not return home in the morning and failed to answer his phone, his family went to the field but did not find him there. Upon searching nearby areas, they found his lifeless body about half a kilometre away.

Following the incident, forest officials reached the spot and set up six cages at various locations to capture the man-eating leopard.

Notably, the menace of wild leopards is on the rise in Veraval-Sutrapada talukas of Gir Somnath. Recently, a leopard mauled a child to death in Morasa village.
