Redevelopment of the Khari Cut Canal, a project covering major parts of East Ahmedabad, is set to move into its next stage as Phase-1 nears completion. The AMC has confirmed that work under the first phase will be completed by January 15, 2026.
Phase-2, covering the stretch from Naroda Mukti Dham to Vinzol, has now been approved at an estimated cost of ₹979 crore. The work will be executed by Konkan Railway Corporation and Fuji Silvertrack Pvt Ltd through a joint venture. With the current term of the civic board nearing its end, the mayor is expected to perform the muhurat ceremony for Phase-2.
The Standing Committee has already cleared the proposal for canal redevelopment across the extended network: from Sardar Patel Ring Road to Naroda Mukti Dham, Vinzol Vehla to Aavkar Hall, Ghodasar, Ghodasar to Vatva, and Vatva back to SP Ring Road via Ropda Lake.
Standing Committee Chairperson Devang Dani said Phase-1 work is progressing rapidly with 96 poles already installed at locations along the route and beautification of adjoining stretches now underway.
Phase-2 will redevelop approximately 22 km of the canal stretch. Depending on the available width, the plan includes:
* RCC stormwater box drains along certain sections
• A combined canal-plus-stormwater box structure in other parts
• Canal box structures in narrow stretches
• Road construction over the completed structures
