Kesar Mango season begins in Saurashtra with soaring prices amid lower production forecast

Saurashtra’s famous Kesar mango season officially kicked off today at the Talala Market Yard with the traditional auction ceremony. Known for its rich saffron hue and exceptional sweetness, the Gir region’s Kesar mango has gained recognition both in India and internationally.

On the first day of the season, the market saw an impressive arrival of 14,500 boxes (each 10 kilograms), a significant jump from last year's 5,750 boxes. However, farmers are facing challenges this year, as experts predict lower overall production due to the impacts of climate change.

Despite concerns over reduced yields, farmers received higher prices compared to last year. On average, prices ranged from ₹650 to ₹1,500 per box – ₹150 to ₹200 higher than the previous season. Traders from across Saurashtra gathered at the Talala Yard, leading to brisk buying of the high-quality produce.

Saurashtra market Yard President Sanjay Shingala highlighted that this year, mangoes are selling for ₹80 to ₹85 per kilogram, up from ₹70 per kilogram last year. However, he also expressed concern that climate damage has prompted many farmers to harvest early, and called for government intervention to prevent further loss.

While artificially ripened mangoes flood the market, health-conscious consumers increasingly prefer naturally ripened Kesar mangoes, matured at home using traditional methods like wrapping them in paper or straw.
