A 5G equipment component belonging to Reliance Jio was stolen from a telecom tower near Ahmedabad's Jivraj Mehta Hospital in Vasna late last week. Police have registered an FIR and initiated an investigation into the theft.
According to the complaint filed by Mohammad Kaleem Sheikh (44), an estate manager with Pratap Technocare Pvt Ltd — a contractor company responsible for Jio’s tower maintenance operations — the theft came to light in the early hours of November 7, 2025, when a technical alarm was triggered from the tower.
The tower is located on the footpath near Haren Pandya Garden, opposite Jivraj Mehta Hospital. Sheikh told police that around 1 am, he received a call from his company’s supervisor, Ramkrishna Dwivedi, informing him that the tower’s power system had shut down. When the two reached the site to inspect, they discovered that the 5G BBU (Baseband Unit) card installed in the tower was missing.
The component, valued at approximately ₹25,000, was suspected to have been stolen by an unknown person.
Vasna police have registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS. Police have started an investigation and begun collecting CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the suspect.
Officials said telecom tower equipment thefts have been reported sporadically across the city and that such cases often involve small gangs targeting high-value components for resale in grey markets. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
