A saleswoman employed at a jewellery showroom in Nikol and her alleged lover have been arrested in connection with the theft of gold ornaments worth ₹1.66 crore from a jewellery store in Ahmedabad, police said.

According to investigators, the accused had allegedly planned to flee Gujarat and start a new life after carrying out the theft. However, the plan reportedly unravelled after the male accused allegedly betrayed his partner and escaped with a large portion of the stolen jewellery.

Police said Harshida Shetty, employed as a salesgirl at 'Abhushan Jewellers' in Nikol, allegedly stole gold ornaments worth ₹1.66 crore from the showroom.

During the investigation, officials found that Harshida’s alleged lover, identified as Mayur Mali, had allegedly encouraged and assisted her in carrying out the theft at the jewellery store.

After committing the crime, the duo allegedly fled on a Bullet motorcycle, travelling first to Udaipur before moving to Jaipur and later Delhi in an attempt to evade arrest.

Investigators said that while staying at a hotel in Delhi, Mayur allegedly abandoned Harshida and disappeared with the stolen ornaments on the pretext of selling the jewellery.

Following further investigation, the Nikol Police Station tracked down and arrested Mayur Mali in connection with the case.

Police said further investigation into the theft and recovery of the remaining stolen jewellery is under way.
