The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a life convict who had allegedly been absconding for more than a decade after jumping parole and living in Mumbai under the guise of an aspiring actor, police officials said on Thursday.

The accused, Hemant Modi, was arrested near Gheekanta Metro Station following a surveillance by the crime branch.

Modi was convicted in a 2005 murder case registered in the Naroda area of Ahmedabad and was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court.

He was lodged in Mehsana jail and later released on parole in 2014. However, he did not return to prison once the parole ended. He allegedly absconded and went into hiding.

Investigators said Modi moved to Mumbai, concealed his criminal background, and began working in theatre productions, Hindi television serials, and films as a struggling actor.

Police claimed he even appeared in Bollywood films, including ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ and ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, besides working in Gujarati films and stage productions.

Officials said despite remaining active in the entertainment industry for years, his true identity had gone unnoticed.

The Crime Branch recently received specific intelligence suggesting that the absconding convict had returned to Ahmedabad and was expected to meet someone in the city.

Based on the input, police launched technical surveillance and tracked his movements through old contacts and communication links.

He was eventually detained near Gheekanta Metro Station, police said.

Officials added that the accused initially attempted to conceal his identity and mislead investigators during questioning, but later confessed after sustained interrogation.

Police said further legal procedures were under way to send the accused back to jail.
