Jain Acharyashri Arvind Sagar Surishwarji prepares a 100 year Panchang

Jain Acharya Arvind Sagar Surishwarji Maharaj Saheb has created a Panchang (a traditional Hindu calendar and almanac) that provides astrological and planetary event details for the next 100 years. This detailed and scriptural Panchang was conceptualised and initiated in 2020 during his stay in Puducherry at the time of  Covid-19 pandemic. After five years of dedicated work, it has now been completed.

On Tuesday at 9 am, in the presence of Acharya Padmasagar Surishwarji Maharaj at Simandhar Swami Teerth in Mehsana, the four volumes of the ‘Shri Simandhar Swami Pratyaksha Panchang na Shatvarshiya Shatrartha’ were officially released.

In astrology, the Panchang (which includes Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karan) holds great significance, especially when it comes to identifying auspicious timings and muhurats.

It is believed that work initiated at the right time is more likely to succeed. To ensure that tasks are completed smoothly and without any obstacles or bad omens, scholars calculate and suggest precise and favourable timings for individuals.

The journey of this Panchang began in 1980 under the guidance of Shri Arunoday Suriji. During the Chaturmas observance in Devkinandan, Ahmedabad in 1985, Acharya Arvind Sagarji’s name was published with a photograph as an editor for the Panchang of Vikram Samvat 2042 (AD 1985–86), which deepened his interest and sense of responsibility towards this spiritual pursuit.

In his quest for deeper astrological knowledge, he connected with Dr Himmatram Mahashankar Jani, a renowned scholar and observatory expert based in Ahmedabad. For nearly two years, he would walk 3 km daily to visit him and study ancient texts like Graha Laghava, Ketaki Ganita, and Surya Siddhanta in detail. He devoted around 10 hours a day to Panchang calculations, creating an annual Panchang by 1989–90, prepared independently through his own mathematical formulations.

By 1988, he had developed Panchang calculation programs using basic language, and in 1990, he transitioned to programming in FoxPro. He also explored astrology software written in the German C language. Following the completion of Panchang computations, he also attempted to create software that could evaluate auspicious and inauspicious yogas (combinations).

Uses of long-term Panchangs

The utility of this 100-year Panchang is highly significant. Traditional Panchangs only provide details for about a year and a quarter, but this extensive Panchang will allow users to access long-term information well beyond that span. Whether it’s for wedding planning, temple construction, religious consecrations, seasonal forecasts (especially monsoons), or unique planetary alignments, this Panchang will be a valuable guide.

It will also provide insights into planetary movements like when Jupiter becomes retrograde and for how long, aiding in financial forecasting based on astrological trends. Additionally, it allows for advance predictions about events like eclipses and their likely outcomes. This 100-year Panchang will not only be beneficial for astrologers but also serve as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars in the field of astrology.
