A Jabalpur woman, two months pregnant, was allegedly killed in a staged road accident after her husband plotted her murder to claim insurance money, police said.
The victim, identified as 24-year-old Kavita Chaudhary, was riding her moped near Kantora village in the Patan area on September 4 when a goods pickup allegedly hit her. Police said the vehicle was then driven over her, killing her on the spot.
Three alleged contract killers have been arrested, while Kavita’s husband Prayas Pandey and his alleged associate Mansingh Lodhi remain on the run. The arrested accused have been sent to judicial custody.
Husband Allegedly Targeted Insurance Payout
According to the police investigation, Pandey allegedly knew about his wife’s insurance policies and wanted to obtain the payout following her death. Reports citing the investigation said Kavita worked as an insurance agent and had insurance coverage in her name.
Police alleged that Pandey discussed the insurance money with his friend Mansingh, following which the two allegedly planned the killing and approached three men through Mansingh.
The three arrested men have been identified as Ramji Chaudhary, Vikram Chaudhary and Dhaniram Chaudhary. Police said they were allegedly paid rs1 lakh in advance for carrying out the killing.
Murder Was Made To Look Like Road Accident
The alleged plot was designed to make Kavita’s death appear to be a traffic accident. Police said a goods pickup was hired for a year for the purpose.
On the night of September 4, Kavita left home on her moped and was travelling towards Jabalpur Road. Near the Ranital culvert in the Kantora village area, the pickup allegedly struck her vehicle.
After Kavita fell on the road, the accused allegedly drove the pickup over her. She suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, police said.
Couple Had Married For Love In 2024
Police said Pandey and Kavita first met in 2022 and later developed a relationship. The couple married in 2024 and lived in a rented house in Aamhinouta after their marriage.
Pandey works as a stamp vendor, while Kavita was associated with the insurance sector, according to the police investigation.
Police Suspected Conspiracy During Investigation
The case initially appeared to be a fatal road accident. Pandey also reached the scene after being informed about his wife’s death and identified her, police said.
However, investigators later began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Their inquiry allegedly uncovered links between the insurance policies, the people involved in the collision and the suspected planning behind the incident.
The arrests of the three alleged contract killers subsequently led police to the alleged involvement of Pandey and Mansingh. Both remain wanted as the investigation continues.
